Retainers play a big role in keeping your smile straight after braces or Invisalign. So if you’ve lost your retainer, you’re not alone, and it’s more common than you might think! Whether it slipped into the trash at lunch or disappeared on vacation, losing a retainer can be frustrating, but it’s important to act quickly to protect your smile.
Here’s what to do if you lost your retainer and how North Coast Orthodontics can help you get back on track.
1. Don’t Panic, But Don’t Wait
The longer you go without a retainer, the more likely your teeth may begin to shift out of alignment. Even a few days without wearing it can undo months (or years!) of orthodontic progress. That’s why it’s important to address the situation as soon as possible.
Quick Tip: If you had both an upper and lower retainer and only lost one, keep wearing the one you still have!
2. Call North Coast Orthodontics Right Away
As soon as you realize your retainer is missing, contact our office in Capitola or Scotts Valley. We’ll schedule you for an appointment to assess whether any tooth movement has occurred and begin the process of getting you a replacement retainer.
The sooner we see you, the better we can preserve your beautiful results.
3. Be Honest About How Long It’s Been
It’s important to be honest with your orthodontist about how long you’ve been without your retainer. If it’s been a few days, we may be able to simply replace it. If it’s been longer, we might need to take new impressions or scans of your teeth, or, in some cases, do minor corrections with clear aligners.
No judgment, just the right solution for your smile.
4. Prevent Future Losses with Smart Storage
Once you get a new retainer, make it a habit to always store it in its case when not in use. Avoid wrapping it in napkins (easy to throw away!) or leaving it where pets can find it — dogs love to chew on them.
Pro Tip: Keep a spare retainer case in your backpack, purse, or car so you’re never caught without a safe place to store it.
5. Consider Getting a Backup Retainer
For some patients, especially teens or those with active lifestyles, having a second backup retainer is a smart investment. Ask us if this is a good option for you, we’re happy to discuss what works best for your routine.
