You’ve completed your braces or Invisalign journey — congratulations! That confident, straight smile you worked hard for is finally here. But before you pack up and move on from orthodontic care, there’s one last, essential step to protecting your results: wearing your retainer.
At North Coast Orthodontics, we always tell our patients in Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Scotts Valley that orthodontic treatment doesn’t end when the braces come off; it simply enters its next important phase. Here’s why retainers matter and how they play a key role in maintaining your new smile for life.
Why Retainers Are So Important
After your teeth have been moved into their ideal positions, they need time to stabilize. The bones and tissues around your teeth are still adjusting, and without the help of a retainer, your teeth may start to shift back to their original positions, a process known as orthodontic relapse.
Retainers “retain” your results, holding your teeth in place while your mouth adapts to its new, healthier alignment.
Types of Retainers We Use
At North Coast Orthodontics, we offer several types of retainers based on your treatment needs and personal preferences:
Removable Retainers
These are typically made of clear plastic (like Invisalign trays) or acrylic with a wire that runs across the front teeth. They’re easy to clean and great for nighttime wear.
Fixed Retainers
Also known as bonded or permanent retainers, these are thin wires attached behind the front teeth to keep them in place long-term, especially helpful for lower teeth, which are more prone to shifting.
Each option has its pros and cons, and we’ll guide you through what works best for your smile.
How Long Do You Need to Wear a Retainer?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer may surprise you. While the initial wear period is more structured, retainers are often a lifelong commitment to maintaining your results.
Here’s a general timeline:
- First 3–6 Months: Wear your retainer full-time (about 22 hours/day)
- After 6 Months: Switch to nighttime-only wear (usually indefinitely)
Skipping wear for just a few days — especially early on — can lead to noticeable tooth movement. That’s why it’s important to follow your custom wear schedule closely.
Tips for Taking Care of Your Retainer
- Keep it clean by brushing gently with a toothbrush (avoid hot water!)
- Store it properly in its case when not in use — never wrapped in a napkin!
- Keep away from pets (dogs especially love chewing on them)
- Bring it to checkups so we can monitor fit and wear
If your retainer feels tight, cracked, or lost, call our office right away. We can assess whether your teeth have shifted and fit you for a new one if needed.
